CONNECTING THE PIECES IN LIFE

Approach

I practice within the framework of psychodynamic self-psychology. This framework positions the sense of ourself at the heart of the therapy. The therapist focuses on understanding how you experience the world, attunes to your needs and responds to you to promote your growth. Rather than focusing on symptoms, this approach views challenges in the wider context of the person and their life experience.

My approach means:

  • I will try to understand how you see and experience life

  • I will take a non-judgemental approach

  • I will help you consider the full context of your life including social, cultural and family pressures

  • I will work collaboratively with you rather than giving advice or telling you what to do

  • I will seek to create a safe space for us to sit with your struggles and any difficult emotions

To help you understand the differences between counselling and psychotherapy, the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) has useful definitions:

HERE FOR YOU

Services

Challenges I can help with include:

  • trauma,

  • relationship challenges,

  • anxiety,

  • depression,

  • grief and loss, and

  • difficulties managing strong emotions.

I may be the right therapist for you if:

  • You are struggling with the impacts of your childhood or experiences of trauma.

  • Have a desire for self-growth and willingness to explore your emotions, inner world and relationship patterns.

  • Want to work collaboratively together to understand yourself better.

  • You feel prepared to commit to weekly or fortnightly sessions which may need longer-term work, based on your challenges.

I’m unlikely to be the right therapist for you if you:

  • Are seeking therapy that mainly focuses on teaching techniques and providing education but no self-exploration.

  • Are looking for short-term therapy.

  • Wish to work with a therapist who will give you advice or tell you what actions you should take.

  • Are seeking a diagnostic assessment or report – as a counsellor and psychotherapist rather than a psychologist I don’t undertake formal assessments of mental health conditions or write reports on the impact of these conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to common questions about the service offered.

What might a session look like?
You choose the issues you want to discuss. During a session we may explore your relationships, history and feelings about your situation and life. Much of what we do will be around reflecting on your life and the patterns in it to help you understand what is important to you and how you want to live your life.

How long does a session last?
Session will be 50 minutes long.

Do you teach techniques?
I believe therapeutic techniques have their place. From my years of practice I have found that for clients who have experienced trauma, techniques may not be helpful early in their therapy. If introduced too early some clients may feel they have “failed” if the techniques do not help or cannot be implemented. However, suggestions may be made at points.
